China's pork imports surged in August, data from the country's customs authority showed. Pork imports logged a 76-percent year-on-year increase to 162,935 tons, according to the General Administration of Customs.

The profits of China's major industrial firms dropped 2 percent year-on-year in August, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Friday. The decline came after a 2.6 percent rise in July.

China's fixed-asset investment (FAI) in highways and waterways registered steady growth in the first eight months of this year, official data showed. Total FAI in highways and waterways reached 1.42 trillion yuan (about $199.47 billion) during the January-August period, a year-on-year growth of 3.7 percent, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said in a report on its website.
