China's economy secured positive growth against all the odds in the second quarter and expanded 2.5 percent year on year in the first half of 2022, showing resilience and potential amid headwinds. Due to the increasingly complex, grave situation abroad and Omicron flare-ups at home, major economic indicators fell sharply in April, a rare scene for the world's second-largest economy.

Virtual and augmented reality technologies, which are vital components to creating a virtual presence in the metaverse, are expected to witness rapid growth in the next few years and inject fresh impetus into a wide range of sectors like education, healthcare and entertainment, said a report released by market consultancy International Data Corp.

China remained the world's leading shipbuilder in the first half of this year, as its market share ranked first globally in output, new, and holding orders, official data showed. The country's shipbuilding output hit 18.5 million deadweight tonnes (dwt) in the January-June period, accounting for 45.2 percent of the world's total, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.

The Chinese mainland on Saturday reported 106 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 53 in Gansu, 21 in Guangdong, and nine in Guangxi, the National Health Commission said Sunday. Altogether 474 local asymptomatic carriers were newly identified in 12 provincial-level regions on Saturday, of which 235 were in Guangxi.

A total of 178,728 people in Hong Kong have taken the fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccines, official data showed Saturday. Since the start of a mass inoculation program in February last year, about 6.76 million people, or 92.8 percent of the eligible population in Hong Kong, have taken at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines, while over 6.49 million, or 89.2 percent of the eligible population, have taken two doses.

Four samples from soft-shelled turtles tested positive to the O139 strain of Vibrio cholerae on July 13 in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. The positive samples were found among marine products at the Baishazhou market in the city's Hongshan District.

China's national carbon market saw its total trading volume reach 194 million tons since its launch one year ago, according to the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange statistics on Saturday.Experts noted that the market, the world's largest in terms of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions covered, is expected to include more enterprises from emission-intensive sectors and see increasingly active trading as companies improve green awareness.
