Chinese biotech companies and universities are stepping up the push to develop the latest robots for COVID-19 testing as a way to reduce the workload on medical staff, boost efficiency and facilitate the revival of cross-border travel.

During the second quarter of this year, China's shipments of wearable devices fell 23.3 percent year-on-year to 28.57 million units, according to global market research firm International Data Corp. In breakdown, the ear-worn devices recorded 16.18 million units shipments between April and June, down 23.2 percent on a yearly basis.

Swedish premium carmaker Volvo is to unveil an electric flagship SUV in November, which features a set of sensors that can slash traffic accidents by one fifth. The model, called the EX90, features eight cameras, five radars, 16 ultrasonic sensors, and a lidar sensor, which can detect pedestrians 250 meters away or a dark tire on a black road 120 meters ahead.

The Chinese mainland on Wednesday reported 114 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, of which 42 were in Guizhou and 41 in Sichuan, according to the National Health Commission's report on Thursday. A total of 512 local asymptomatic carriers were newly identified.

China is concerned about the discriminatory electric vehicle subsidy provisions in the US Inflation Reduction Act, according to the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday. Those provisions allow subsidies on pre-conditions such as localized assembly of whole vehicles in North America, which forms discrimination against relevant imported products, Shu Jueting, spokeswomen of the Ministry of Commerce, said at a media conference.

China's non-financial outbound direct investment, or ODI, rose 7.2 percent year-on-year to 492.76 billion yuan ($69.51 billion) during the first eight months of the year, the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

Leading fast-food chain McDonald's China opened the company's first zero carbon restaurant in the Shougang Park in Beijing recently, part of its upcoming move to open more new green outlets in the country.



Top 500 Chinese firms break the 100 trillion yuan ($14.42 trillion) operation revenue threshold for the first time in 2022, according to the latest Top 500 Chinese Enterprises released by the Chinese Enterprise Confederation on Sept 6.
