The eighth National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week kicked off in Hefei, Anhui province, on Thursday, with Premier Li Keqiang urging further efforts to unleash people's entrepreneurial energies and spur innovation. Addressing the opening ceremony of the annual event via video, Li said China will deepen reforms to streamline administration, delegate power, improve regulations, upgrade services, support startups and deepen innovation players' engagement in international cooperation.

China has spent more money from its general public budget on improving people's livelihoods and keeping the job market stable this year, according to official data released Friday. Expenditure on social security and employment totaled 2.53 trillion yuan (about $365.05 billion) in the first eight months of 2022, up 6.6 percent year on year, data from the Ministry of Finance shows.

China's trade with other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) witnessed rapid growth in the first eight months of the year, official data showed Friday. The trade volume jumped 26 percent year on year to 1.73 trillion yuan (about $250 billion) in the January-August period, according to the General Administration of Customs. The growth rate was 15.9 percentage points higher than that of China's total foreign trade.

The Chinese mainland on Friday reported 76 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 34 in Sichuan, the National Health Commission's said Saturday. A total of 505 local asymptomatic carriers were newly identified.

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Friday reported the first case of monkeypox on the mainland, CCTV News reported, citing the city's health commission.The infected person entered Chongqing as a transfer from overseas, and developed rash symptoms during central quarantine for COVID-19.

China's popular bike-sharing is helping achieve the country's green goals as the pedaling activity contributes to carbon reduction. Over the past year, users of shared bicycles and e-bikes via Internet platform Meituan have saved 436,500 tons of carbon dioxide by cycling, the company said in a report released ahead of World Cycling Day.

China is playing an increasingly important role in driving global economic recovery amid fears over a gloomy world economic outlook and pressures from COVID-19 outbreaks and geopolitical tensions, experts said. They said China's economy will likely maintain its recovery trend in the following months, and the country has solid foundations and the conditions to sustain steady growth in the long run with its ultra-large domestic market, strong innovative capabilities, complete industrial system and continued efforts to deepen reform and opening-up.
