A global chip shortage that has lasted for about two years is seeing a sudden shift into oversupply in semiconductors for smartphones and personal computers, as consumer demand for certain electronics has been weaker than expected of late, experts said. The comments came after global PC shipments experienced the sharpest decline in nine years during the second quarter, which reduced the sector's demand for chips, according to market research company Gartner Inc.

The Chinese mainland on Thursday reported 64 locally transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 30 in Gansu and 17 in Guangdong, the National Health Commission said on Friday. Altogether 368 local asymptomatic carriers were newly identified in 10 provincial-level regions on Thursday.

China's gross domestic product expanded 2.5 percent year on year in the first half of 2022, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Friday. In the second quarter, the country's GDP grew 0.4 percent year on year, the NBS data showed.

China's economy grew by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of 2022 compared with a year earlier to post a 2.5 percent growth in the first half of the year, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday. Figures released by the NBS showed value-added industrial output, a gauge of activity in the manufacturing, mining and utilities sectors, grew by 3.9 percent in June from a year earlier after a 0.7 percent rise in May.

China's economy will likely continue to rebound in the second half of the year, and the country will keep economic performance within a reasonable range, the country's top economic regulator said on Thursday. Although the economy is facing downward pressures and uncertainties at home and abroad, experts said the momentum of China's growth will gather pace in the second half, as the economy will continue to draw support from stimulus policy this year.

China will take a raft of measures to stabilize and improve the quality of foreign trade in the second half of the year (H2) to consolidate its resilience, a commerce official said Thursday. In the first half of this year, China's foreign trade demonstrated strong resilience, overcoming the adverse effects of various factors at home and abroad, Shu Jueting, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, told a press conference.
