China is taking concrete steps to stabilize foreign trade and investment after economic activity cooled sharply amid pressures from weakening external demand and resurgent COVID-19 cases, officials and analysts said.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Thursday pledged to strengthen support for the industrial economy despite mounting downward pressure, as part of efforts to stabilize the country's economic fundamentals.

China's major ports handled over 23 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in May, up 4.2 percent from a year ago, according to the Ministry of Transport Thursday. In May, the cargo throughput of major ports monitored reached 1.03 billion tons, an average daily increase of 3.2 percent compared with April, data from the ministry showed.

DHL Global Forwarding, a division of Deutsche Post DHL Group that provides air and ocean freight forwarding services, said it is prepared with enough resources and capacity to start moving cargo in and out of Shanghai as the city gradually opens up again after recently battling a COVID-19 outbreak.

Safeguarding cybersecurity is of great importance to the healthy development of China's digital economy and more efforts are needed to combat rising cyberattack risks that target critical information infrastructure and supply chains, industry experts and company executives said.

China is likely to extend its current value-added tax credit refund policies to seven more industries including wholesale and retail, agriculture, accommodation and catering, education, social work, entertainment and sports.The move is expected to increase this year's tax refunds by 142 billion yuan ($21.23 billion) to 1.64 trillion yuan.

China's economic recovery showed fresh signs of momentum with factory activity data reflecting improvement in May, as gradual resumption of work and production was seen in regions hit hard by the recent COVID-19 outbreaks.
