An employee at Pudong International Airport has been confirmed with the highly infectious Omicron variant, Shanghai's local COVID-19 infection control authority reported on Monday. Genetic sequencing confirmed the Omicron variant, which is more transmissible than the previously dominant Delta variant, according to the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

China's southernmost province of Hainan plans to provide free vaccines against cervical cancer to about 71,000 female students aged 13 to 14 and a half this year. The vaccination work is scheduled to start from the spring semester and will be carried out annually in phases. It is estimated to benefit 30,000 to 40,000 female students every year, according to the provincial health commission.

President Xi Jinping reiterated on Wednesday that China will present streamlined, safe and splendid Olympic Games to the world as the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will open next week. Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remark in a congratulatory message delivered to the China Media Group Forum: Together for a High-Tech Winter Olympics, which opened in Beijing on Wednesday.

The World Trade Organization has issued a decision on China's countermeasures against the United States countervailing duties (CVD) on certain Chinese products , ruling that China could retaliate with duties on $645 million worth of US imports per year for its failure to comply with a WTO ruling, according to the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday.

Chinese scientists have discovered four species of gentiana on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, according to a study recently published in China's English scientific journal Science Bulletin.The four species of the flowering plant react to being touched by rapidly closing their petals.
