China is proving crucial to Elon Musk's ambition in terms of electric vehicles, and the latest proof is this: over half of Tesla's global sales last year were made at its two-year-old plant in Shanghai. Over 484,000 Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs rolled off the facility's assembly line in 2021, accounting for 51.7 percent of Tesla's global deliveries of 936,000 units during the year, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Shanghai's new local COVID-19 infections have been confirmed as the highly infectious Omicron variant.Shanghai reported two locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and three local asymptomatic cases on Thursday. They are related to an imported asymptomatic COVID-19 case reported in the city on Tuesday.

Beijing reports one confirmed case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, local authorities said at a news conference on Saturday.The case shows symptoms since Thursday and has not left Beijing in the past two weeks, an official said at the conference.

The Chinese mainland on Friday reported 104 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Saturday.Of the new local cases, 52 were reported in Henan, 39 in Tianjin, eight in Guangdong, four in Shaanxi, and one in Zhejiang, the commission said.

China's top economic planner has approved two railway projects, with a combined investment of 238.26 billion yuan (US$37.4 billion). The projects include one high-speed rail track connecting north China's Tianjin and Weifang in east China, and one linking Xi'an in the northwest and Chongqing in the southwest, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

China is at the global forefront in developing the internet of things, leading the way with the construction of IoT infrastructure, and its industrial applications and exploration, a new report said. The report, released during the 2021 World Internet of Things Convention on Thursday, said China, despite the impact of COVID-19, maintained steady growth in the field last year, especially leaping ahead in terms of the IoT economy.

China's mobile wallet Alipay has made its digital payment platform available in San Marino, allowing the European country to connect with a suite of mobile payment options in Asia. Built in a partnership between Alipay's parent Ant Group and BKN301, a fintech Banking-as-a-Service company that operates as a payment institution in San Marino, the initiative will make Alipay's cross-border payment and marketing available to San Marino stores, allowing merchants to accept mobile payments from Asian customers.
