Swedish electric carmaker Polestar sold 29,000 vehicles globally in 2021, up 185 percent year-on-year. The joint venture between Volvo and Geely now has two models available in the market, all of which are made in China. Polestar said its sales in China last year soared 471 percent from 2020.

Although China is successful in bringing the pandemic under control, recent outbreaks of new locally transmitted cases in parts of the country have rung alarm bells for public safety ahead of the start of the Year of the Tiger.

A total of 137 people had been infected with COVID-19 as of 2 pm Wednesday in north China's Tianjin Municipality in the latest resurgence, according to local authorities. The cases include 76 locally transmitted confirmed cases and 17 asymptomatic carriers, said Han Jinyan, deputy head of the municipal health commission at a press conference held on Wednesday.

The Chinese mainland on Tuesday reported 166 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Wednesday. Of the new local cases, 118 were reported in Henan, 33 in Tianjin, eight in Shaanxi, and seven in Guangdong, the commission said.

The southern Chinese island province of Hainan reported 49.5 billion yuan ($7.78 billion) of offshore duty-free shopping in 2021, up 80 percent year-on-year, with more than 70 million items bought by 6.72 million shoppers.

Chinese startup U Power unveiled a new car production mode on Tuesday, which are designed to shorten carmakers' development of electric vehicles. Advances in vehicle modularization and intelligence have made possible the new mode, said the company when it unveiled a standalone chassis and three standalone cabins at the event.
