Beijing saw the reading for a major air-pollution index fall to the lowest level in the January-November period since records began in 2013. The city's average concentration of PM2.5 was 33 micrograms per cubic meter in the first 11 months of this year. It is also the lowest level in 28 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and neighboring provinces, Yu Jianhua, deputy director of the Beijing municipal ecology and environment bureau, told a press briefing Tuesday.

China has urged United States airlines to ensure passengers' legitimate rights after a China-bound flight returned to the US midair, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the US said today. The sudden rerouting of the December 21 flight from Seattle to Shanghai caused huge losses to Chinese passengers as their visas and COVID-19 tests expired and could no longer meet time requirements, the spokesperson said.

The Chinese mainland on Monday reported 182 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the National Health Commission said in its daily report on Tuesday. Of the new local cases, 180 were reported in Shaanxi, and one each in Zhejiang and Yunnan, the commission said.

Ant Group is closing its mutual aid program Xiang Hu Bao (Mutual Protection) in a month, the firm said on Tuesday. Launched in October 2018, the mutual aid health program offers one-time cash payouts of up to 300,000 yuan (US$45,000) for those with critical illnesses or life-threatening injuries.
