China has been working over many years to improve healthcare services to the poor, considering it an important part of poverty alleviation to prevent people sinking back into poverty due to illness. An improved three-tier healthcare system at village, township and county levels has been established, and an over 99 percent basic medical insurance coverage of the poor has been achieved, two major achievements largely propelled by governmental forces to resolve the problem of difficult and expensive access to medical treatment for poverty-stricken residents.

Yunnan province, China's main supplier of flowers, reported robust sales in the run-up to this year's Qixi festival, or the Chinese Valentine's Day, on Saturday. The Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center has traded over 80 million stems of fresh cut flowers since Aug 3, when the region's major flower auction market started to prepare for Qixi, compared with over 40 million in the same period last year, said Ni Wentao, deputy head of the center's auction branch.

Almost a month on since its launch on July 16, China's national market for carbon trading is taking baby steps toward long-term stability after the initial flourish and the expected subsequent slump, with experts stressing that more efforts are needed to improve the pricing mechanism.

China pledged on Friday to continue its participation in science-based COVID-19 origin-tracing, urging the WHO Secretariat to fully consult with member states on the global work plan for the issue and carry out effective cooperation.
