A major railway line linking northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province was put into operation on Wednesday, paving the way for the accelerated development of the country’s western region. The 1,206km Golmud-Korla railway, linking the city of Golmud in Qinghai and the city of Korla in Xinjiang, is the third railway facilitating exchanges between Xinjiang and other regions.


China sent two satellites for the detection of gravitational waves into planned orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province on Thursday morning. The two satellites, which compose the Gravitational Wave High-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) mission, were launched by a Long March-11 carrier rocket at 4:14am (Beijing Time), according to the center.


China's National Health Commission said on Thursday that it received reports of 12 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Wednesday, one of which was locally transmitted in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Eleven cases were imported from outside the mainland, the commission said in its daily report.


Southwest China’s Chongqing has suspended the operations of all coal mines in the city following two fatal accidents. The suspension began on December 5, one day after 23 people were killed due to excessive levels of carbon monoxide in a closed coal mine in Yongchuan District.

Despite market complexities and uncertainties, which have been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Shanghai has managed to meet the goals in its 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), with the city's annual GDP estimated to top 3.9 trillion yuan ($596 billion) by the end of this year, the municipal government announced on Thursday.
