China on Thursday signed an agreement with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, officially joining COVAX, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Friday. This is an important step China has taken to uphold the concept of a shared community of health for all and to honor its commitment of turning COVID-19 vaccines into a global public good, Hua said in a statement released on the Foreign Ministry's website.

The World Bank said on Wednesday that the coronavirus pandemic could push as many as 150 million people into extreme poverty by the end of 2021, wiping out more than three years of progress in poverty reduction. Releasing its flagship biennial report on poverty and shared prosperity, the multilateral development lender said that an additional 88 million to 115 million people will fall into extreme poverty — defined as living on less than US$1.90 a day — in 2020.

China's Internet and related sectors maintained a double-digit growth in business revenue and research development in the first eight months of this year, official data showed. Major internet companies raked in 796.2 billion yuan (US$116.91 billion) in the January-August period, up 13.6 percent year on year, which is 1.3 percentage points lower than the growth rate registered in the first seven months, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The prolonged holiday that ended Thursday gave domestic consumption fresh impetus, with spending bouncing back to new heights as coronavirus-imposed impacts on the economy are on course to be further curtailed.

China's daily passenger trips of railways, highways, waterways, and civil aviation reached 62.12 million during the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, the Ministry of Transport said on Thursday. During the Oct. 1-8 period, a total of 379 million highway passenger trips are expected, with the average daily passenger trips to reach 47.37 million, down by 30.93 percent from the same period last year.

Tourism Ministers of the Group of 20 (G20) agreed on Wednesday to maximize the tourism sector's contribution to inclusive and sustainable development. The ministers urged for further developing the sector as a key and resilient industry, which will contribute to the global economy and generate decent work, according to a statement of the Saudi G20 Presidency issued after a meeting.

Urumqi customs in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region cleared nearly 25.2 million cross-border e-commerce lists worth 106 million U.S. dollars from January to August, up 370 percent and 390 percent respectively year on year.
